Foods intended for dogs do not contain any toxic components for cats: if the kitty occasionally steals a kibble or two from Fido’s bowl, we need not worry, but regular consumption can become a source of trouble.
Although they are both carnivorous animals, dogs and cats do in fact have specific nutritional needs, which must be absolutely respected if we want to keep our friends healthy.
First, dog food lacks the necessary supplementation in taurine, arachidonic acid, niacin and vitamin A, nutrients that the cat cannot produce on its own and needs significantly more than the dog.
Second, Fido’s gruel does not provide enough protein to meet Kitty’s needs. On the other hand, it contains a higher proportion of carbohydrates, which the dog can use to produce energy while in the cat they can expose the feline to the development of diseases such as obesity and diabetes.
Fortunately, dog foods are generally disliked by cats, but a gluttonous kitty may still appreciate an extra snack. This is why it is best to avoid leaving the dog’s meal for the cat to eat, especially in the case of kibble.
By offering each a specific, quality food you will be sure to protect their health and avoid future unpleasant consequences.
